Tests For Prostate Gland Problems
The most common tests for prostate gland problems are known as a digital rectal exam, which is a physical examination of the prostate. The other common one is a blood test which is called a PSA test. The medical name for this is called prostate specific antigen. Further tests might have to be carried out, depending on the results. One of these is called a prostate biopsy exam.
For men over the age of 50, the digital rectal exam is a common procedure. Here the doctor inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to check for any unsual signs, such a hard or soft bumps.
PSA Blood Test
With regards to the PSA blood test, this is carried out to find if there are any signs of prostate cancer present. The score in a PSA test will rise as the prostate cancer develops. One needs to be worried should it rise above 4.
If the present of prostate cancer is suspected, then a prostate biopsy exam would be recommended. Local anesthetic will be used on the area under investigation. As the biopsies are take, you will feel nothing more than uncomfortable sensations. In all this procedure take no more than 15-20 mins. The positive things about this procedure is that it will confirm the presence of prostate cancer and the extend to which it is present.
