- I like a lot of men until lately could not tell you what the PSA test meant or where the actual prostate was in the body. Even more the majority of men would find it extremely hard to talk about the prostate because its function plays a part in urinating and sex. Most would feel embarrassed.

However the PSA (prostate specific antigen) test is now recognized as an important test for men over the age of 45 in screening for prostrate cancer. In fact it is not far in saying that the test could actually save your life and it is .

The Prostate PSA test actually measures a protein called protease which is secreted within the prostate gland. The levels will determine whether further investigation are required to check for prostate cancer and also BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia )

Doctors will use the results of the tests to gauze for the presence of prostate cancer or bph. In patients who had prostate cancer treatment the test can show whether the cancer is in remission or has returned.

It is highly recommended that men over the age of 45 should have the PSA test. Do this on a regular yearly basis because the bottom line is that early diagnosis of prostrate cancer is the best way of beating this terrible disease.
