Prostate Cancer Facts

Prostate cancer is something that is more common than ever. It is extremely common in men above the age of 45. In fact, the older the male is, the more likely he is to have prostate cancer. There are several things that help determine the risk of a man having prostate cancer. Take a look at how many men get prostrate cancer and who is at most risk.

Over 200,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in America each year. The American Cancer Society estimates that one in six men actually get prostate cancer in their lifetime. Although this number is quite high, the good news is that of those 200,000+ men diagnosed this year with prostrate cancer, only a little over 20,000 will die from it.

Learning what to look for in terms of early warning signs and early symptoms is what is saving many men from perishing from prostate cancer. However, prostate cancer still remains as the second most common cancer in males over the age of 40 (lung cancer is first).

Many men benefit from the latest treatment plans and from simply detecting their cancer early. However, some men seem to be doomed from birth as prostrate cancer is genetic and those with a family history of prostrate cancer are more likely to have it themselves. Since more than 93% of those diagnosed with prostate cancer are between the ages of 45 and 80, it is important to be checked each year at your annual physical.

So, when it comes to prostate cancer, those diagnosed should know they are not alone and their chance for survival is terrific. Early detection is the most important thing to realize and that is usually easy to remember when you visit your doctor annually. Don’t skip those annual appointments and get a better handle on your prostate health today. I hope that this post on prostate cancer facts has been of help

Prostrate Cancer Treatments

If you are at risk for developing prostate cancer, or if you’ve already been diagnosed with the disease, you may be interested to know that there are plenty of prostate cancer medicines and treatments available today.

For prevention, one method recommended by physicians is to have an annual prostate gland exam. Though slightly uncomfortable (the physician’s finger is inserted in the rectum), it lasts only a matter of seconds and could mean the difference between a stage I diagnosis and a stage IV one.

Secondly, some good preventive measure against any type of prostate cancer is to eat a diet rich in antioxidants, get regular exercise, and quit smoking. For instance, choose a salad over a fat-laden appetizer when you order at a restaurant; you’ll never miss the feeling of cheese fries sitting heavily in your stomach. And at work, stop using the elevator; instead, walk to your office (or walk up some of the flights of stairs if you work on the top floor of a skyscraper.) Finally, drop the smoking habit now. You’ll feel strange at first, but wonderful later.

If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, there are traditional treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. They vary in invasiveness; thus, some may be better for you (depending on your age and health status) than others. For instance, if your cancer is in a stage I, you might want to opt for radiation or cryosurgery (a newer way to operate which involves freezing the cancer cells and surrounding tissues.) However, if your cancer has spread beyond the prostrate gland, you might need to take more radical measures, such as removal of the prostate and surrounding tissues and follow-up chemotherapy.

There are also medicines you can use for treatment and prevention of prostate cancer, such as hormone therapy. Basically, the male hormones are suppressed by prescription drugs, thereby causing the prostate gland to shrink. Most of the time, hormone therapy will not eradicate existing cancer, but it can create an environment where the cancer is unable to grow. Again, it’s a very personal choice.

Remember that if you’re a man, you need to be aware of the dangers presented by prostate cancer, as it affects 1 in 6 American men during their lifetimes. However, with early detection, the survival rate five years after diagnosis hovers just under 100%, an excellent figure.

Prostrate Cancer Treatments

Prostate cancer is an unwelcome diagnosis, but thanks to medical science and technology, there are new treatments available for men of every age and health status. One of the latest is cryosurgery, a minimally invasive techniques that involves freezing the cancerous cells in and around the prostate gland.

However, one concern has been that, in some patients, cryosurgery results in nerve damage which can cause anything from a sensation of a full bladder (even after it has been emptied) to complete impotence. Still, the small amount of blood loss is often worth it to prostate cancer patients and their loved ones.

Another treatment is radiation, which is becoming more and more useful because equipment allows surgeons to better target the cancerous cells. Therefore, the radiation is directed at exactly the right spot, leaving behind little damage to the surrounding tissues. Of course, radiation isn’t for every male with prostate cancer; if the cancer has spread too far, radiation may not be effective or may only be useful in conjunction with other treatment methods.

Some patients opt for a complete removal of the prostate gland to stop the spread of cancer. This can cause hormonal and bladder/bowel problems, but may be an ideal choice for those who are concerned about prostate cancer “moving” to other body parts (especially those which are far away from the body.)

In addition to these three treatments, there are alternative therapy methods for dealing with prostate cancer, though they are often met with skepticism from the medical community. One such “natural” remedy is the macrobiotic diet, a very strict food plan that advocates declare can rid the body of cancer and other poisonous toxins. Though no studies have shown that this is a definitively effective way to cure or control prostate cancer, hundreds of patients flock to macrobiotic foods each year in an attempt to treat their cancers without surgery or hormone therapy.

Whatever treatment you choose, make sure you discuss it at length with your physician. And if you feel your doctor isn’t giving you the courtesy you need, never forget that you can always get a second opinion. If nothing else, it will help you decide the best prostrate cancer treatment. And you may hear about new cancer drug trials happening for which you could be a part.
