Prostate Cancer Radiation Treatment

- Cancer is something that is often tackled in several ways. Many traditional therapies include not only one method of treatment, but two or three. Cancer is such a rapidly progressing thing that doctors like to be aggressive in treating it. Radiation is one treatment for prostate cancer, and many other types of cancer as well.

With prostate cancer, radiation therapy is used in the early stages most often. It actually uses high energy rays to get rid of the bad cancerous cells and to stop them from spreading. If the cancer is detected extremely early, sometimes radiation will be used instead of surgery. To boost survival rates, radiation is often also used after surgery.

The after effects vary from patient to patient when it comes to radiation therapy. There are many doctors that will tell you that your side effects will depend on the type of radiation used in your treatment, as well as the dosage used in your treatment.

One of the overall after effects that almost all patients complain of is fatigue however, so if you are going through radiation you should know it is a normal part of the treatment.
Overall, if your doctor recommends radiation therapy, you should strongly consider going along with it. It is likely one of the most comfortable treatments you can undergo and you will likely benefit from the treatment. Even if you have surgery, remember that most doctors will recommend radiation therapy as well, just to be on the safe side.

Many patients undergo radiation therapy where they have pellets implanted into the cancerous tissue. These pellets will help the cancerous cells die and will help keep them from multiplying as well. There is a likelihood that you will have a few problems with incontinence when you have these pellets in your body. However, many of these problems will go away during the prostate cancer treatment.

Important Prostate Cancer Information

Though no man wants to hear that he has prostate cancer, the diagnosis is far less fatal than it was for past generations. In fact, only 1 in 34 males with prostate cancer will succumb to the disease. These are good odds and indicative of the advancements in cancer treatments and the medical information available.

In fact, there are now many options available to men who have been stricken with prostate cancer. The most common are radiation, surgery, and hormone therapy; however, chemotherapy may also be used in some cases.

Radiation therapy involves a surgeon aiming high energy beams at the patient’s body (either externally or internally) in an effort to “shrink” the prostate cancer. Radiation is often chosen by patients whose cancer has not spread to the surrounding tissues; thus, the beam can pinpoint the affected area(s) and leave the prostate intact.

Surgery in the form of either a radical prostatectomy or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) are often chosen by patients and their doctors in response to a prostate cancer diagnosis. Radical prostatectomy involves removing the prostate gland as well as tissue surrounding it. “TURP” doesn’t cure the cancer (or even remove all of it); instead, it’s focus is to relieve some of the symptoms of prostate cancer, such as urination difficulties.

Hormone therapy has been shown to have some effectiveness in prostate cancer patients. Basically, the levels of androgens (male hormones) are lowered in an effort to encourage the prostate cancer cells to shrink. However, hormone therapy has never been shown to completely eradicate the cancer; instead, it merely slows down the growth for a period of time.

Finally, chemotherapy may be used by some prostate cancer patients. Drugs which are injected into the male’s veins enter the bloodstream and attack the cancer cells. It is important to note that although chemotherapy is becoming a more viable option for those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is still not as effective as radiation or surgery in the vast majority of cases.
